Woodfin's Katy, Texas Champion Heeler buckle

For a young guy trying to make a living with a rope, a month-long slump can be hard to stomach. Go three months entering everything you can and still not make a dime? That could be enough to make even the best pack it up and head home to find some steady work.

Will Woodfin

In 2012, Will Woodfin was living at Chad Masters’ house and learning the ropes while attending school at Weatherford College. He was jackpotting and entering the amateur rodeos, but he couldn’t seem to catch a break for three months.

“Then I went to Katy and was 4.4 with Chace Thompson,” Woodfin remembers. “This buckle is special to me because every time I go into a slump, it’s been my reminder that if you keep at it, things always turn around.”

Katy, Texas, is an amateur rodeo sanctioned by the Cowboys’ Professional Rodeo Association. Woodfin won it in 2012, and then would go on to become the 2013 Resistol Rookie of the Year Heeler. He’d then win the Wildfire Open to the World in 2014 with Clay Smith.
